In honour of International Women's Day, our La Fosse Academy Director Sophie Hebdidge and La Fosse Associate Director Claudia Cohen share their top tips on how women can empower themselves and others around them, stand out from the crowd, and reach their fullest potential.
Sophie says:
"Say yes to opportunities, even if you don’t think you are ready or will be the only woman in the room. The best way to learn is to do, so say yes to chances when they come your way and step out of your comfort zone!"
"Back yourself. Be bold and dream big. You can achieve whatever you set your mind to, but know there is no shortcut through hard work."
Claudia says:
"Being self-aware is important, knowing your strengths and weaknesses and trying to work on weaknesses and highlight and play to your strengths."
"If you don’t know your strengths and weaknesses, ask others for feedback so you know what areas you need to work on/improve."
Sophie says:
"Find a mentor. Never stop asking for advice from someone who’s a few steps ahead in their career than you. Use them as a sounding board for big decisions, tricky situations, and guidance."
"Even better: Be a mentor. You don’t need to be senior to mentor others, you’ll be surprised by how much you can learn from passing your experience onto others."
Claudia says:
"Have the right attitude, be willing to learn, take feedback and always look to constantly be improving."
"Try and put yourself out of your comfort zone, that’s how you make sure you’re learning and progressing."
Sophie says:
"Don’t be afraid to rock the boat. You’re at the table, so make it worthwhile."
"Get comfortable with ‘no’, or find softer ways to say no. Try ‘Thanks, but….’"
"Try not to dodge problems; a quick chat about an issue can fix it instantly, rather than wasting weeks whilst it festers."
Claudia says:
"In a male dominated environment it can be easy to stand back and not contribute. Try to understand and create the right environment for you to feel confident contributing."
Sophie says:
"Figure out what you are good at and what you enjoy then try to find work that uses those skills."
"Never stop asking questions. If you don’t know an acronym - ask, confused by another division’s presentation – set up time to understand it with the presenter. You should be looking to constantly increase your knowledge."
"Find ways to learn from inspirational people. I love to read books, listen to podcasts and follow inspirational people on social media."
Claudia says:
"Try and find sponsors within the business who may be able to help you develop."
